Situation

Various technical and design teams of Hero MotoCorp are based out of Europe, North America and India. Since these teams have to work in coherence with each other and often work together on different assignments, their work needs to be shared with the teams at other locations. While collaborating with each other, care was to be taken that there was no potential threat to the Intellectual Property being developed while sharing was happening. Hero MotoCorp was earlier using a cloud solution which posed a lot of security and tracking challenges in the documents being shared. To cater to these challenges, Hero MotoCorp developed a solution based on the Microsoft Azure platform with the help of PC Solutions which provided them with a reliable, secure platform where storage, service support and security issues were being taken care of as per their business requirements.

 

Solution

Hero MotoCorp evaluated the offerings & capabilities of the Azure platform and involved PC Solutions Pvt Ltd. because of their professional capabilities on the platform being aMicrosoft Gold Certified Partner. Through discussions, it was realized that a customized solution could be built using the Azure platform which suited the business requirements for collaboration keeping in mind the various concerns for granularity, security and availability.

PC Solution along with the Hero MotoCorp team did a deep dive envisioning and planning activities to design the solution based on the understanding of business needs and challenges. The solution involved a major break up of three components i.e.

1. The Azure based solution comprising a dot net based application running on the Cloud Services, SQL Azure, Blob Storage.

2. The second component was the back end administration portal that was provided to the organizational administrators to manage access to the platform and gave them rights to add, edit and modify users and give those rights and accesses accordingly.

3. The final piece was the actual portal where the users can log in and upload, download and share their documents with theircounterparts. There was IP based security enabled on the application which ensured that the users were not able to access the same from outside the office premises. The other aspect was close integration of the platform with emails alerts and detailed activity logging of each operation done by all the users on the platform. Hero MotoCorp also signed the Azure Enterprise Agreement with Microsoft as a strategic decision to move to the Azure Cloud.

 

Teams from different offices now work together with ease, access documents, and collaborate with each other from anywhere, and, are confident of a secure business environment.

Situation

Established in 1927, The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) is the largest and oldest apex business organization in India. Headquartered in New Delhi, India, it works closely with the government on policy issues, articulating the private sector’s views, enhancing efficiency, competitiveness and expanding business opportunities for industries through a range of specialized services and global linkages.

 

FICCI focuses on international networking and interactions and has joint business councils with 79 countries around the world. It has over 2,50,000 companies as members, either directly or via regional chambers of commerce. With more than 7 offices worldwide and 500 employees, it supplements government efforts in 39 industries with a variety of initiatives.


Until March 2012, FICCI was using a web based e-mail service, Rediffmail by Rediff.com. Over the years, the organization identified a number of limitations. Rediffmail was not reliable and availability was the biggest concern. There were problems in log such as slow server response, frequent data loss, slow service response due to server issues. “We at times lost 72 hours per month due to frequent downtime or log on related issues. The poor support in resolving issues was a major concern,” recalls Rajiv Mishra, Additional Director and Head IT, FICCI.

 

FICCI has access to sensitive and confidential information pertaining to member companies, policy and regulation related information. This makes security extremely important for the organization. Frequent instances of spam and phishing along with data loss were a cause for concern.

From an IT cost and management perspective, the 500 MB mailbox size meant frequent mail backup. This requires IT resources and storage. FICCI would backup and archive Outlook files manually on the SAN (Storage Area Network). Therefore, larger mailbox sizes on the cloud would remove the need for manpower and storage infrastructure at each location.

 

Since Rediff offered only POP (Post Office Protocol) mail servers, synchronizing emails across devices such as smart phones, server and Microsoft Outlook was another issue.

“As smart phones become ubiquitous, our employees expect email access on any device. This was difficult to provide with our existing messaging solution. We realized, the absence of reliable email communication could paralyze the organization, as it was already hindering our efficiency,” says Rajiv Mishra.

 

 

Solution

FICCI surveyed the market and shortlisted Google Mail, Lotus Notes and Microsoft Office 365. It checked feasibility based on its requirement and decided on Office 365.

“We prefer Office 365 over others because of its compatibility with existing infrastructure and simple setup for desktop as well as mobile users across platforms including Window, Blackberry, iPhone or Android,” explains Rajiv. “Local Active Directory synchronization and 99.95 percent uptime were other added attractions.”

 

FICCI chose Microsoft Gold Certified Partner, PC Solutions, as its preferred partner for data migration and implementation of Microsoft Exchange Online. PC Solutions started implementation in April 2012, and within 2 months, it deployed the solution across FICCI’s 12 domestic as well as international offices for over 500 users.

 

Active Directory Rights Management Services secures data stored at rest in Microsoft data centers. In addition, the on-premises Active Directory authenticates and synchronizes the Global Address List (GAL) and allows single sign-on.

 

After the initial migration to Office 365, it plans to add another 200 Exchange Online licenses each quarter to stagger operating expenses over the year.

 

In August 2012, FICCI, with the help of PC Solutions started deploying Microsoft Lync Online, a collaboration tool for 50 users. It realized that Lync could benefit the dispersed teams. Based on the initial success, the company has added another 25 users across the organization.

Employees and management don’t have to worry about crucial business information’s security,” explains Rajiv. In-built antivirus and anti-spam filters protect every email account. Moreover, round-the-clock telephone support in local language further boosts confidence.

NDTV boosts application availability with Citrix XenApp

New Delhi Television Limited (NDTV) is India’s first and largest private producer of news, current affairs and entertainment television. NDTV has 23 offices and studios across the country and hosts India’s most modern and sophisticated production and news gathering facilities. The challenge – Seamless application delivery

As India’s pioneering and leading news television company, NDTV has maintained a consistent business growth rate for a long period. However, the demand for its channels by a growing news and current affairs audience meant that additional investments had to be made in core business applications and IT infrastructure. It also became necessary to account for competition from multiple news, current affairs and entertainment channels that launched in the last few years.

Said K. Y. Iyer, head-IT, NDTV, “Even as we were experiencing fast-paced business growth, we had to contend with a highly competitive and crowded marketplace. The primary challenge that we faced about five years ago was to publish non-Web and business-critical applications via the Internet. Users wanted applications delivered to them faster.  The key was to centralize these applications and deliver them to employees at more than 20 locations around the country. Fortunately, our incumbent IT infrastructure was not that mature, diversified or multi-locational for us to face any migration or porting challenges as such, and thus the centralization premise matched our expansion plans. While evaluating various solutions in the market, we felt that Citrix XenApp matched our strategic endeavors and would address the challenges of rapid application deployment and business expansion.”

These applications also had to be pushed beyond the main premises in New Delhi to a growing number of locations around the country—and quickly at that. Fast, on-demand access to the applications by different levels of users was becoming paramount.

Implementing an application virtualization infrastructure from Citrix

NDTV partnered with New Delhi-based PC Solutions (a Gold Citrix Solution Advisor) to implement a solution comprising Citrix® XenApp™ and Microsoft® Windows Server® 2003. Currently, about 80 users are accessing a host of applications via the Web from different locations around the country using the Web Interface capability of XenApp. Middle management professionals, workers, managers, production staff and down-the-line personnel are accessing standard Microsoft Office applications, a finance application, some specialized television broadcast station applications and a customized advertising schedules system. The users connect via leased lines and Internet connectivity is provided by Internet service providers (ISPs) such as Bharti, Spicetel, Pacific Internet and Spectranet in different regions of the country.

Speedy and centralized application delivery supports business growth

Centralized management and speedy application delivery with XenApp is playing a key role in enabling the tremendous growth of NDTV, including additional locations in state capitals across India.  Iyer attested to the all-round benefits that have been experienced since the deployment of the Citrix solution.

“While we have not set metrics in place, the cost savings from centralized application delivery to multiple locations at one stroke are immense. We have avoided a lot of heartburn about having to use manpower and resources to physically deploy these applications. Another advantage is improved security. With application processing happening on the server behind the firewall, and with user access strictly defined, our confidential information is protected.”

Timely access to applications by a host of users is critical in a highly competitive news-gathering environment. Iyer pointed out the important relationship between the 24-hour breaking news cycle of all the channels on NDTV’s platform and high availability of applications to end users.  

“There are no perceptible delays in application delivery and we have achieved higher business productivity and better end-user satisfaction. It is a question of enabling users and giving them the rights to access applications as and when they want, and we have addressed that satisfactorily with XenApp.”

IT administration is streamlined

Since the Citrix deployment coincided with a maturing IT infrastructure, there are no comparisons to scenarios in previous IT environments. However, centralized management from New Delhi has streamlined IT administration to a great extent.

Concurred Iyer, “IT administration is definitely a breeze as there is potentially only one location where my staff must go to resolve issues: the datacenter. Application rollout itself involves just one round of effort—implementation on the servers—which enables the IT team to deliver applications and services to users faster. Because we no longer have to send IT staff to different locations for application maintenance or troubleshooting, we have saved significant time and effort as well as travel costs over the long run.”

Helps NDTV Managed Video Better

NDTV need a storage solution that would allow windows ,Mac and Linux clients to effortelsesly  access video footage. New Delhi Television has been in the business of news broadcasting for 21 years, from the famous The World This Week during the 90’s to a slew of channels today that are supported by 23 offices and studios across the country. The company faced storage issues arising out of storage silos and looked for a storage consolidation exercise to ease long form edit processes.

The Problem of Plenty

Broadcast businesses rely on skilled manpower to edit and post process multiple tapes that can total up to over ten times the final air time. Adding to their woes is the sheer size of the videos. “We use videos that need between 13GB to 27GB per hour of footage”, explains K.Y. Iyer, Head – IT at NDTV. NDTV primarily uses Apple Macs for editing long format programming with small amount of central and local storage. The centralized storage in the earlier schema was not expandable. The company’s infrastructure includes Windows and

Linux clients as well. The problems arising out of this setup were causing unnecessary delays in editing. When the video files had to be moved between workstations, they had to be copied to external hard disks or over the network. Neither solution was optimal. With files sizes often upwards of 10GB each, moving files of a single project often required the entire disk space of an external drive, not to mention requisite free space on the workstations themselves. NDTV increasingly felt the need for a centralized storage which would allow files to be read by editing tools running on different platforms. Adding a simple fileserver to the network was not practical given the need for fast increasing storage needs. A fileserver would be able to grow to a much smaller extent than an HP SAN plus StorNext solution.

The ideal solution would allow each client to see the storage in a file system that is native to that host.

The StorNext Solution

NDTV’s solution lay in the form of the StorNext file system which was deployed in the StorNext MDC Server installed on dual HP ProLiant DL380 G7 Servers. StorNext is a high performance file system that enables Windows, Linux, UNIX and MAC OSX clients common access to underlying data. It allows different operating systems to natively mount the file system. This file system allows adding to or upgrading the underlying storage for growth and migration. The storage itself was installed on the HP P2000 Disk Storage Array which supports a storage size of 24TB. Explaining the choice of the solution, Iyer says, “Our editing and compositing platforms  already used a lot of HP solutions and it made sense for us to combine Stornext with HP storage for our heterogeneous  environment.”  After the storage consolidation move, NDTV’s post production artists have 20TB of capacity available to them.b y saying “Users are very happy with the performance arising out of the SAN and StoreNext”.
